Spoiler Free The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review

As many regular readers probably know, Gamerfaith’s main goal isn’t to write reviews. Seeing as how we just wrote an article about God’s Not Dead, it seems strange that we are already doing another review. There are a couple reasons for this.

  1. Spidey is my favorite superhero, and it can be fun to write reviews about things we like!
  2. I think the consensus that many critics have arrived at (about this movie) is way off.

Right off the bat, let me say that I am not a biased Spidey fan. Although I did love the original two Sam Raimi  Spider-Man films, I felt that the subsequent spidey flicks had fallen short. My least favorite entry out of all of the Spider-Man movies was Marc Webb’s original The Amazing Spider-Man. I didn’t hate the movie, but I didn’t love it either. With that being said, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently receiving the worst reviews of any Spider-Man movie to date. My expectations (which were relatively low thanks to reviews) were completely shattered when I left the theater.

This spoiler free The Amazing Spider-Man 2 review will be split into two sections.

  1. Content Review
  2. Movie Review

It only seems fair that a movie is scored based off of how good it actually is. With that being said… there are different types of good. The Movie Review section will rank things like: story, visuals, and overall quality. The better the movie, the higher the score. The Content Review measures things like: violence, sex, conflicting spirituality, and language. The less junk there is in the movie, the higher the score will be rated.

Questionable Content Review

Violence is probably the main concern in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In fact, this is probably the most violent Spider-Man movie so far. There is action throughout, and a few gruesome sequences. One of the villains is surprisingly sadistic and scary. We see people being shot, we see people being tortured, and while this is nowhere near what you would find in a Dark Knight film, it is probably the darkest Spider-Man movie to date.

With that being said, this movie isn’t a depressing and gritty drag through the mud. A good portion of the movie is funny, uplifting, kind-hearted, goofy, and inspiring. Spidey is still Spidey here (maybe more than ever before) and I had a lot of fun watching the movie.

Peter Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy is seen in a short skirt or two. The two of them kiss on several occasions. Another female character is wearing a somewhat revealing outfit. Peter Parker is seen shirtless. There are a few more things scattered throughout that I won’t mention because I don’t want to ruin any of the movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is probably the most respectable Spidey movie thus far (in this area) and is leaps and bounds better than many of it’s super hero competitors (like Iron man or X-Men).

The Lord’s name is used in vain a handful of times. I hate that. A few other cuss words are scattered throughout. Peter tells lies several times throughout the movie.

Paganism and Evil Spirituality:

As mentioned before, the Lord’s name is used in vain. One of the villains makes a comment about being a “god.” Spidey mocks him for this statement.

Questionable Content Verdict:

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is dark at times and pretty violent. Language is sprinkled throughout as well. Prepare for a darker Spidey movie than normal, and be ready to talk to your kids about it (if you have kids and decide to bring them). With that being said, Spidey is another tale of “good” guys vs. bad guys. The heroes of the movie aren’t portrayed as ruthless killers, but instead as people who are trying to stand up for what is right even when it comes at a cost.

The Gamerfaith Questionable Content Score For The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is:

(Probably a step in the right direction for superhero films)

 Movie Review

Critics have been saying things like:

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has too many villains
  • It is a jumble of subplots
  • It’s similar to every other Spider-Man movie

And yet, occasionally, I stumble across a review from someone who thought the movie was fantastic.

To me, this was one of the  best Spidey films to date. I certainly didn’t feel that it had too many villains, and the villains that it did feature had story-lines that meshed together well. There were many subplots in the movie, but they effectively worked together to tell one over-arcing story.

Spidey was full of pleasant surprises, stunning action, great humor, and emotional moments.

If you like superhero movies, and especially if you are a Spidey fan, I am confident that you will like this movie. If you are interested in bringing your kids, understand that there are some violent moments. If you’re a parent, be ready to talk with your kids after the movie.

If you decide to see the movie, I hope you enjoy it!

Love you guys! Praying for you!
