Restart

I apologize for any horrible advertisements that may play on the youtube player before the video starts. Feel free to scroll down until the actual video starts.

When I found this amazing lyric video for ‘Restart’ by the Newsboys, I couldn’t resist making a post involving it. It captures a lot of ideas from retro gaming, and points it towards a much more important message.

Depending on whether the above video looks more like Megaman or more like Minecraft, we can probably guess the age you started gaming with some accuracy. For old-school gamers, the idea of ‘Restart’ is probably pretty familiar. Consoles like the NES, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo 64 used to have a button on the face of the system labeled ‘Restart’ or ‘Reset’. If your game froze, you did something wrong, or you were just flat out playing badly; you had the friendly ‘Restart’ button waiting for you. When you pushed it, the whole game would reset from the beginning (go figure).

Christian rock band Newsboys hit it on the head when they chose this word as the theme for a new song, and the title of a brand new album. The idea of restarting has amazing meaning in a Christ followers life. Keep reading to hear more about it…

Game Over

Game Over

I don’t know the kid in the picture above, but I’m willing to guess that he isn’t happy about getting that ‘Game Over’. That’s because seeing those words ‘Game Over’ is bad news! In many retro games this has some harsh implications. All of your progress is gone, the journey is over, and you fell short. The princess is still in another castle. Animals are still trapped by Dr. Robotnic. The president is still captured by ninjas.

In a video game it’s easy to say ‘meh’, hit the power button, and walk away. Real life has much more difficult implications though, and the truth is that all sinners fall short. Does that mean it’s Game Over? Not necessarily.

Romans 3:10-25 (ESV)

as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;

no one understands; no one seeks for God.

All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”

“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”

“Their feet are swift to shed blood;

in their paths are ruin and misery,

and the way of peace they have not known.”

“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it–

the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

Read all of Romans 3!

When we are born again we get a new life. Check out John 3. That’s what the line ‘Take The Extra Life!‘ is all about. The law of the Old Testament makes it incredibly clear that we all fall short, but God’s love wins.

If you want an amazing love story, this is it. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus, we can choose to accept the ‘Restart’. Let Jesus Hit the button’, and start you over again. This is good news! Really really good news!

Back In Action

Megaman 8 bit (Light Stencil)

Don’t set your controller down yet. The ‘Restart’ gave us another chance, so of course we don’t run headfirst into Goombas, spikes, and pitfalls on purpose. We don’t just sit around like zombies and wait for the time-limit to run out either. If we are free, it’s time to put our faith and works into action!

Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV)

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Read all of Matthew 28!

Notice the above verse doesn’t say “go get people to half-heartedly follow me, or at least say they will follow me…”

I see the words “MAKE DISCIPLES” (emphasis added)

I think there can be a horrible tendency to get someone to say “I accept Jesus”, and then move onto the next thing. Every Christian has a responsibility to not just abandon these people who make decisions for Christ. Young Christians need to be cared for and built into disciples of Christ, and that takes more than a few words.

Your mission is to get people to become disciples for Christ, and teach them to observe what He commanded!

Don’t know where to start?

  • Pray about it
  • Spend time reading the Bible
  • Seek help from other believers
  • Use trusted available resources
  • Show people you truly care
  • Genuinely love God and others

If you have any questions about ‘Restarting’, please feel free to talk to a trusted Christian friend, or contact me here! I’d love to hear from you! To all my family who has already been born again, stay persistent and love God and others with all your strength.

Love you guys,

-Caleb
