A Pikmin’s Heart – Thanks For Being So Helpful

Hello Gamerfaith friends! Today’s article is going to be talking about humility, teamwork, and servitude. Naturally, one of my favorite video game series popped into my head when thinking about this topic.

Pikmin is a family favorite around here. I still remember receiving a copy of the original Pikmin from my dad years ago.

Several years later I introduced the series to my girlfriend, and eventually it became her favorite game series. We spent (and occasionally still spend) a lot of time bonding over Pikmin. It’s a lot of fun working as a team to fulfill mission requirements. We even named our cat Olimar, which is the name of the main character in the series.

What Are Pikmin?

Some of you may have never heard of Pikmin before. That’s okay, I’ll fill you in!

The Pikmin series follows the adventures of several space travelers. The most significant of these travelers is Captain Olimar.

In the original Pikmin game, Olimar crash lands on a mysterious planet. This is an especially devastating circumstance, because Olimar only has a 30 day supply of oxygen. Pieces of his ship have been scattered all across this mysterious planet, and he’s in big trouble if he can’t collect them before his oxygen runs out.

Olimar isn’t alone, though. Shortly after crashing on the planet he discovers a race of alien creatures that he names “Pikmin”.

There are several different types of Pikmin, and each type has unique strengths and weaknesses.

  • Blue Pikmin can breathe underwater
  • Red Pikmin can survive fire
  • Yellow Pikmin can endure electricity, and can be thrown very far
  • Purple Pikmin have the strength of 10 normal Pikmin, but are very slow
  • White Pikmin are weak, but speedy
  • Pink Pikmin can fly
  • Rock Pikmin can break through glass and crystal

As Olimar (and several other space travelers) proceed through their adventures on the Pikmin planet, they must work together as a team in order to accomplish tasks. If it wasn’t for their diversity, the missions would fail.

Unique Gifts

Without Olimar, Pikmin wander around somewhat aimlessly. Without Pikmin, Olimar can accomplish very little. Olimar organizes a plan, and each of the unique types of Pikmin work to accomplish what they are designed to do.

If a red Pikmin decided that he wanted to go on an underwater mission, he would drown. If a blue Pikmin decided that he wanted to try to fight a fire breathing enemy, he would likely be burned.

The point is this: God made each of us unique. Use your gifts, and work together with other Christians who have different gifts.

1 Corinthians 12 (ESV)

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–Jews or Greeks, slaves or free–and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

A Pikmin’s Heart

Another thing I love about Pikmin is their willingness to serve. They never argue with a task, they just do what they can to help. If Olimar didn’t have help from these friends, he would likely fail.

In the same way, if I didn’t have help from people like you, I would likely fail.

Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)

Gamerfaith can be a difficult thing to keep up with. Over the last several months, however, I have been greatly encouraged by many amazing people.

  • One friend is writing an epic story that you can read here!
  • Several other friends have shared that they are overcoming their porn addiction with God’s help!
  • My girlfriend and family encourage me to make Gamerfaith a priority.
  • My epic bearded friend Craig has written two guest posts (so far). Check them out here and here!
  • A former coworker frequently encourages me to keep up on my Bible reading time.
  • Just this morning a friend messaged me to tell me that he had a lot in common with me. He was happy to find a website that thought about games and movies in a deeper way. He also introduced me to an awesome Christian metal band that I had never heard of before.
  • Tons of other people who share and contribute in other ways.

All I can say is thank you. Friends like you help to inspire me to keep going with Gamerfaith. You are a huge blessing to me, and I am truly appreciative of the time that you take to contribute to this ministry. You are just as important to this ministry as I am. I truly believe that God has led us together for a reason.

I love you guys!

Keep up the good work, friends! Remember your missions:

Mark 12:29-31 (ESV)

29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV)

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Once again, I love you guys! Thanks for being such an encouragement to me!
