How to Stop Worrying

Worrying is no fun! Even ask Luigi! He commonly struggles with worry; despite the fact that he’s saved his brother from creepy mansions, rescued princesses, and starred in a crazy trivia based game. (Mario Is Missing, look it up)

As someone who has struggled with worry for years myself, you would think I was an expert on the topic. The truth is, this is something I continually have to battle. God has helped me though, and I continue to learn more about this difficult struggle, and how to fight it.

What makes worry so bad?

  • It can suck the life out of you.
  • It can steal your focus.
  • It can rob you of sleep.
  • It can make Luigi whistle nervously for the duration of an entire game.

So how can we calm down, and send the “worry monster” packing? Keep reading to hear my thoughts.

Worry Does You No Good

Matthew 6: 24-34 (ESV)

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,

yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

You don’t gain any exp. points from worrying. You can’t make your troubles magically disappear from worrying either. So what can worrying gain you?

Proverbs 12: 25 (ESV)

Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down,
but a good word makes him glad.

Heavy heart. Headaches. Anxiety. Loss of perspective. Loss of sleep.

Those aren’t even the worst of it!

“What could possibly be worse?” You may be asking.

Hang tight, friends! That’s coming up next!

Worry May Indicate a Bigger Problem

Luigi and Mario Question Block

Mario can tell that Luigi has a “big” problem. If we notice that we are worrying a lot, it may be an indication that we are lacking faith. We can let things like money, jobs, school, relationships, and health get to us all day long.

All of those things may be legitimate cause for heartache, I would certainly not deny that. Problems in those areas need to be addressed, but worrying is a useless way to handle them. That’s because worrying doesn’t fix the problem, it just amplifies it.

Matthew 6:30 (ESV)

But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

If we have faith in God, and focus on His ways, our worries will start to shrink. God can take care of our problems, which leads me to the next point.

How Can We Defeat Worry?

Luigi Mario Extra Life

Philippians 4: 4-8 (ESV)

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

How can we defeat worry? We can’t. God can. Instead of focusing on our problems (which can distract us from God), we should focus on giving our troubles to God (Which can solve the problems, or help us through them).

Here’s what I have found helps me with worry.

First, you should pray. Give your problems to a mighty God. Not only are prayers super effective, they also put things in perspective. Not everything is in our control. When we give those things to God, it can put us at ease. It also shows that we have faith in our Lord.

After praying, you can try to redirect your focus. There’s no sense worrying about something, if you know God will be with you no matter what. Read your Bible, or find some other positive place to direct your focus.

If you feel yourself starting to worry again, tell yourself no. Or as my girlfriend often says “No, no, no! Wrong way!” (a Diddy Kong Racing quote). Make up your mind that you aren’t going to worry. Tell yourself that no matter what, you still trust God. I’ve found that this really, honestly, helps.
